Sleep Token's "Take Me Back to Eden"

By Max Calabrese

Sleep Token's “Take Me Back To Eden,” released on May 19th, 2023, known for “The Summoning” and “Take Me Back To Eden,” is very synth-heavy with experimental R&B and metal and some breakdowns here and there. I like that they explore a lot with each track, especially with the lyrics of “Aqua Regia,” “Ascensionism,” and “Take Me Back To Eden.”

Starting off the track list is “Chokehold,” which personally kicks off the album really strongly with the synths setting up for the vocals followed by the drums and guitars.

Aside from R&B and metal, I wasn’t expecting to discover what I think is some bossa-nova in tracks like “Aqua Regia.”Throughout the album, it has made me question what genre each track reminds me of. An overall genre I can make out would be prog-metal or rock.

The art covers for the singles “Chokehold,” “The Summoning,” “Granite,” “Aqua Regia,” “Vore,” and “DYWTYLM” are incredibly unique, telling a story in parts with mysterious figures building up to the next release and eventually the album.

7/10 Listen to “The Summoning,” “Take Me Back To Eden,” and “Aqua Regia”
