Throwback of the Week: Greeving by Abandon All Ships

By Max Calabrese

Abandon All Ships’ “Geeving,” released on October 4th, 2010, known for “Take One Last Breath” and “Geeving,” is breakdown heavy, a mix of metal and techno with some auto-tune here and there. The only non-heavy track in the album is “Strange Love,” being more techno.

I like how “Bro My God” and “Structures” start off strong with a neat guitar riff. The outro for “Bro My God” is very random, with two people talking. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make out what the first person was saying, but from what I found, the second was, “But daddy, it’s just a weiner.” There are many speculations on what the last bit is about.

What brought my attention to this album is the obscured track titles such as “Bro My God,” “Family Goretrait,” and “Megawacko 2.1,” which I find both humorous and impressive with the wordplay, especially for “Bro My God” and “Family, Goretrait.” I was caught off guard by the outro for “Geeving” being switched to expecting a breakdown to dubstep. I found that an impressive choice experimenting with different outcomes.

9/10 Listen to: “Take Your Last Breath,” “Geeving,” “Guardian Angel,” “Bro My God,” and “Structures”
