Everyone has been itching for some new music since the world went to a halt. It’s what keeps us all sane! So, we recently spoke to Canadian musician Joshua Wood, to talk about his upcoming album. It’s definitely a special one to check out! Originally from the East coast of Canada, Wood now resides in the West and is creating some damn fine tunes. With an essence of singer-songwriter vibes combined with rock, jazz, soul, and just downright good music, this is what he had to say...

Behind The Scene Press:

What three words would you use to describe your music?

Joshua Wood:

Soul, sex, and tears!

BTS:

What are your main musical influences?

Joshua Wood:

I’d say disarray and discomfort…and when something breaks and there’s no way possible to fix it..and Dick Tracy style back streets..and when you see someone you don’t know crying and feel like you shouldn’t be seeing their moment of frailty but you look anyways ‘cause in a strange way it comforts you knowing you’re not the only one who hurts...

BTS:

What is music to you?

Joshua Wood:

Therapy. Haha but I’d say more than just that. It can be dog ears in the great damn book of time, it tells the future while holding your hand through your past and ignoring you in the present. It can be an abusive partner. A buried treasure you get to keep finding and being excited about the same as the first time. A lonely lover just there for a night. Overall though I’d just say it’s the closest thing to magic I’ve ever seen.

BTS:

How have your two current releases been received, Bad Way and Surrender?

Joshua Wood:

Really great! And holy hell was I worried about that because it’s a spankin’ new sound for me. Never know what people are going to like or not so it's something I try not to focus on and just do what I’m feeling. But ya, that second of releasing it for the first time is a bit of a nervous one.

BTS:

How did the idea of your new music video come about?

Joshua Wood:

That was over a couple of phone calls with the director Kaio Kathriner and editor Tom Malencini. We really bounced ideas and worked well together so the ideas just flowed. Very influenced by the covid times and yet trying to include a personal storyline as well. So the mask and gloves came into play, and the disconnect between me and my friends through tv screens while desperately trying to gather and hold onto them while they drive away..just kind of a personal struggle blended with a world struggle I think.

 BTS:

What is your process when writing music?

Joshua Wood:

Just being ready for it. Remembering to feed it and keep a pen nearby.

BTS:

When is your new album due to be released?

Joshua Wood:

August 14th it goes live on Bandcamp for three days only. Raising money and awareness for Black Lives Matter and sending 100% of all profits made to them.

You can purchase it by clicking here.

BTS:

What should we be looking out for next, what’s on the horizon?

Joshua Wood:

We’re working on something special for an album release show right now. Get back in the studio ‘cause the songs are piling up and then tour, tour, tour!
